Winona County Board Chair Mena Kaehler is asking voters in the county's Third Commissioner District for another four year term in office. Kaehler is facing Steve Jacob and Bruce Speltz in the August 14 primary election.
A central theme of Kaehler's campaign is supporting the status quo. Kaehler is fiercely proud of her record in office and the way county government is working to meet the needs of residents. Kaehler also rejects criticisms that the county board has invested too much authority in staff. She is quick to applaud the professionalism of county department heads and, in particular, County Administrator Duane Hebert.
Kaehler says that in her time in office the county has reduced its structural deficit from two million dollars annually to less than a half million dollars. She says that county staff has been reduced by 37 in that same time with no lay offs and no reduction in services. Kaehler says she hopes voters will look at that record and give her a second term.
