Alma Police Chief Resigns

Alma Police Chief Roger Engel has resigned after a two-month suspension for alleged mishandling of a criminal investigation.

An inquiry and investigation ordered by the city council was dropped and a severance package was approved giving Engel pay for unused sick leave and vacation time.  Engel was suspended with pay May 8th, after the city council met in closed session to discuss some complaints against him.  Details on the suspension allegations were not released.

Todd Ritscher, a Buffalo County sheriff's deputy and former Alma city police officer, has been working part-time since Engel was suspended.  Engel was hired as police chief in 2008. He came from Rib Lake, Wis., where he was police chief for 9 years.  A search will begin for a new police chief.
