The 17 year old suspect in the incident involving a bomb that was discovered in a Mayo Clinic parking ramp in Rochester on July 19th, is now facing formal criminal charges.
Winona County Sheriff Dave Brand said Nahum James Bergen was charged in Winona District Court Thursday with felony counts of possession of an explosive device and discharge of a firearm that endangers safety.
Bergen is currently being held at the secure juvenile correctional facility in Red Wing pending his next hearing next Tuesday, July 31st. Brand said Bergen was arrested at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester Thursday following his release after receiving treatment for a non-related traffic crash.
Brand said his department obtained evidence at a Utica residence where Bergen is alleged to have manufactured the pipe bomb. It was found in the trunk of a car parked at a St. Mary's Hospital parking ramp after Bergen's mother reported it to hospital security.
The bomb was recovered by the Bloomington Bomb Squad and detonated at a different location. Brand said evidence of a previous pipe bomb was found at the Utica residence which lead authorities to Bergen. Bergen had been living at another residence in Winona County near Troy at the time the bomb was found in his mother's trunk.
