Chiefs Open Region Tournament Saturday



The Winona Chiefs play in the Region 5C playoffs starting Saturday in Wanamingo. The Chiefs will be the five seed in the tournament and they will take on second seed Stewartville-Racine. The Sharks were the regular season and postseason Twin Rivers League champions and they bring in a 19-9 record while the Chiefs are 19-7. Stewartville-Racine took two of three meetings against the Chiefs including a 6-5 win in 11 innings in the semifinals of the Twin Rivers League playoffs. The lone Chiefs’ win against the Sharks was a 9-6 win on July 6th. John Wenker will get the start on the mound for the Chiefs on Saturday. Wenker is 2-0 this season with a .95 ERA. This will be just Wenker’s third start this season due to his commits to his job.

The Region 5C tournament will provide some tough competition for the Chiefs. Top seed Mankato is ranked seventh in Class C state amateur baseball rankings while third seed Owatonna is ranked fourth in Class C.

If the Chiefs win on Saturday they would play the winner of Owatonna and Kasson at 6:00 on Sunday in Owatonna. If they lose
Saturday, they would play the loser of the Mankato and Zumbrota game on Sunday at 1:00 in Owatonna.
