The shipping lane on the Mississippi River south of La Crosse has reopened after it was shut down on Tuesday after a barge went aground near Brownsville.
A spokesman at Lock and Dam Seven at Dresbach said two towboats passed through the locks there early Friday upbound and one went through Thursday evening downbound. WKBT TV reports a 1200 foot long, 15 barge towboat went aground early Tuesday near Brownsville causing the U-S Army Corps of Engineers to close the shipping down for a time.
The Corps is performing emergency dredging at the site to level out the nine-foot shipping channel. The Corps said current drought conditions did not contribute to the barge running aground.
