The City of Alma is advertising for a new police chief.
Former police chief Roger Engel resigned in July after the city suspended him for alleged police errors. Alderperson Mary Johnson advised filling the position sooner rather than later. She also thought the county sheriff should be in involved in the hiring process.
The deadline for applications is Sept. 12th. Mayor Robert Scow said it might be November before a new chief is hired and on duty.
Council members Jim Wilkie and Larry Farl advised against fast-tracking employment of a new chief. Short cuts were taken the last time Alma hired a police chief, Wilkie said.
Farl and Wilkie said the hiring process might take some time, but it was worth it to use the selection process to find a good police officer.
