The Winona City Council will be asked Monday night to support a resolution from the city's Human Rights Commission that would oppose the proposed marriage amendment to the state's constitution.
Voters in November will be asked to decide the proposed amendment which defines marriage as between one man and one woman. The amendment was approved by the state legislature last spring.
The Human Rights Commission's resolution says the amendment is contrary to the purpose of the state constitution to protect the rights and freedoms of all citizens. 12 other cities in Minnesota have taken stands against the proposed constitutional amendment.
The council meets at 6:30 p.m. Monday at City Hall.
