It's no longer illegal to walk the streets of Hokah and carry a beer.
The Houston County News reports the Hokah City Council voted 4-to-1 to abolish the public consumption law in the city. A Hokah resident asked the council to review the law in view of some changes that had been made since it was originally enacted
The resident said another recent law preventing smoking inside bars and residents means that smokers must go outside and some want to bring a drink outside with them.
Hokah Police Chief Bob Schuldt the ordinance was rarely enforced but if it was taken off the Hokah books, it becomes an enforcable state law and the penalties are much worse. Schuldt said only two citations have been issued over the past six years....
