Winona police said a 61-year-old Winona man was struck and killed by a train in the city's east end Friday.
Police Chief Paul Bostrack said Mark Rodney Henningsgaard was walking westbound on the railroad tracks near the Louisa Street crossing east of Mankato Avenue when he was struck.
Bostrack said Henningsgaard was pronounced dead at the scene.
He said the incident happened about 10:10 a.m. The train , which was westbound and approaching Louisa Street, sounded its horn and put on its brakes but was unable to avoid striking Henningsgaard.
The investigation has been turned over to the Winona County Medical Examiner for review.
The Louisa Street crossing was closed for about two hours following the mishap.
