Pool 8 Ceremony
The names for the final seven constructed islands in Pool 8 have been chosen.
Members of the public submitted 400 entries to help the La Crosse District of the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge name the islands. The selections were announced Thursday to those attending the public island dedication ceremony.
Names selected for the seven new islands are: Willow Sprig, Heelsplitter, Softshell, Jewelwing, Musquash, and Pumpkinseed Islands.
Individuals who submitted winning names received a certificate recognizing their contribution and a commemorative bottle of sand from the island that they named.
The judging committee was comprised of representatives from the Minnesota and Wisconsin Departments of Natural Resources, Mississippi River Wild, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
