Glacier Sands Permit Denied

A Buffalo County zoning panel has denied permits for a proposed Glacier Sands mining project on farmland in the town of Montana.

Six mining permits wanted by landowners partnered as Seven Sands, LLC, were rejected by unanimous 3-0 votes by the Buffalo County Board of Adjustment Wednesday in Gilmanton.

Glacier Sands, LLC, a mining developer that packaged lease agreements to extract sand from some 450 acres of farm property, ran into the same alliance of forces that stopped permitting of a load-out railway spur and drying plant in the town of Milton in July.

A series of conditional-use zoning permit applications rapidly filed in advance of a 7-month non-metallic mining moratorium imposed by the Buffalo County Board in March have met fierce resistance when brought to public hearing.

With the suspension on new or expanded mining permits set to expire Oct. 31, Buffalo County is now proposing a 6-month moratorium extension to April 30.

The board of adjustment cited the likelihood of a moratorium extension as one of the reasons for denying Seven Sands permit applications.
