The Winona State football team pulled out a wild 45-42 win over Upper Iowa on Saturday. The Warriors scored two fourth quarter touchdowns and held on for the win. Rayon Simmons scored with eight and half minutes remaining to give Winona State a 38-35 lead. On Upper Iowa’s next possession, WSU’s Jared Mitchell intercepted an Upper Iowa pass and returned it for a touchdown to push the lead to 45-35. Upper Iowa responded with a score to cut it to three and then got the ball back with a chance to tie or win in the end. Winona State’s defense came up big though and stopped the Peacocks on downs at the WSU 44 yard line.
Winona State’s Rayon Simmons rushed for 191 yards and two touchdowns while quarterback Jon Teigland passed for 349 yards. Winona State improves to 4-1 with the win and they will host undefeated Sioux Falls Saturday night at Verizon Wireless Stadium.
