GET Bond Referendum

The Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau school district says it has no intention of seeking any more than $800,000 per year over its revenue limits even though the State of Wisconsin says the amount should be much more than that.

The district thought its 2010 referendum, approved by the district voters, authorized it to collect an extra $800,000 each year for five years, starting with the 2011-12 school year.  According to a district newsletter, the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction has interpreted the referendum wording as requiring the collections be cumulative over the five years, meaning the district should collect $4 million in extra taxes during the fifth year.

The newsletter says the school board disagrees with that interpretation and will continue to collect the extra $800,000 through the 2015-16 school year.  The district says it will seek a legislative solution to the problem through its local legislators.
