The Winona County Board of Commissioners on a 4-to-1 vote accepted a request from its recycling contractor for added payments for additional pickups...but the commissioners made one change.
Veolia Environmental Services had requested an additional $58,000 each year for its five year contract because of additional pickups of recycling bins in some 241 Winona city blocks that were not part of the original deal. Board members approved the additional payments but made the first year, 2012 payment, retroactive to July First instead of January First.
Board member Marcia Ward voted against the additional payments saying the county should stick to the original bid or it may set a precedent. Board Chair Mena Kaehler voted in favor of the additional payments saying Veolia has been going above what the county asked.
The additional payments will come from existing money in the county's solid waste funds. However, a representative of Veolia at the meeting said the change in the company's request could result in additional negotiations with the county.
