The pending retirement of Winona County Auditor--Treasurer Sue Rivers is prompting a renewed discussion about whether the position should be appointed or elected.
Rivers will step down at the end of this month with two years left on her term.
The consensus on the County Board is to have the position remain elected and Commission Marcia Ward said she wants to see who wants the job.
County Attorney Karin Sonneman said legally the county can appoint someone to serve the rest of Rivers' term. Commissioner Jim Pomeroy said he has no argument either way.
The board took no action on the issue but may form a subcommittee to establish qualifications for an interim replacement. The issue will be brought back to the board's next meeting on November 27th.....
