The Winona County Farm Bureau President spoke to the Lewiston Chamber of Commerce Wednesday and talked about how farming has changed through the years.
Glen Groth told the chamber that Winona County remains a strong source of agricultue, ranking 33rd out of 87 counties in the state in total value of ag products sold.
Groth says Winona County ranks 2nd in milk production, 3rd in fruit nuts and berries, 4th in total cattle and calves and 2nd in the state in organic farm numbers.
Groth says since 2002 the total number of farms have increased 7% while the actual size of the farms has shrunk to an average of 254 acres ....
Groth says 77% of farm income in Winona County come from livestock sales and 23% from crop sales. Dairy accounted for 66% of total livestock sales in the county.
