The Winona County Sheriff's Department says a 31 year old rural Utica man was treated at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester Wednesday night after he accidentally shot himself in the hand.
Investigator Rob Averbeck said Shane Matzke was cleaning the loaded 9-millimeter high power Browning handgun at his home while watching television when it discharged. Averbeck said the bullet went through the palm of Matzke's left hand, through a wall, and into a bathroom.
There were no other injuries. Authorities were summoned to the hospital about 11:30 p.m. after being notified by hospital staff. Averbeck said the shooting was ruled accidental and no charges were filed.
