Construction of an intermodal frac sand facility in the City of Wabasha could get underway soon.
KTTC.com is reporting the Wabasha Planning Commission Friday approved the loading and storage facility on a unanimous vote.
The operation had been requested by Superior Sand Systems of Calgary, Alberta, which plans to load silica sand, hauled into the facility that is mined in Wisconsin, on to Canadian Pacific trains. The sand would then be shipped to North Dakota and Texas for use in the oil and gas extraction called hydraulic fracturing.
The Planning Commission approved a conditional use permit for the operation which could see hundreds of truck trips a day into the community.
