Arcadia on the Air

A reminder that an era is coming to an end in 2012 Saturday when the "Arcadia on the Air" program signs off for good during a live broadcast from the Arcadia Area Historical Society this weekend.

"Arcadia on the Air" has been broadcast daily from KWNO's Arcadia studios since 1959. It was hosted by well known local bandleader Ernie Reck until his death in March of 1996.

Reck started on the air with a weekly broadcast from KWNO's Winona studios ten years earlier. It is believed to be the longest running remote broadcast radio program in the nation.

Since Ernie's death, the program, featuring polka music and local Arcadia news, has been hosted by his former assistant Ruth Gappa. Gappa's retirement means the end of "Arcadia on the Air."

The public is invited to be a part of the live audience for the final broadcast at 12:45 p.m. Saturday at the Arcadia Area Historical Society. There will be live bands, dancing and refreshments.
