A proposed new veterans cemetery near Preston may have moved a step closer to reality thanks to Governor Mark Dayton's budget proposal unveiled this week.
The Post-Bulletin of Rochester reports Dayton included $425,000 in the budget for the cemetery that is also awaiting federal funding for its estimated cost of some $8 million.
The vet's cemetery would be just the third of its kind in Minnesota and would be located on 155 acres of land donated by Fillmore County. It would have enough space for 40,000 to 50,000 veterans and is planned for an opening in 2015 or 2016 if the federal funds are received.
Republicans Greg Davids of Preston and Jeremy Miller of Winona were instrumental in getting the cemetery approved by the 2011 legislature.
