The Winona High girls’ basketball team picked up a huge win Thursday night beating Rochester Mayo 46-38. The Winhawks forced 16 first half turnovers and used a 21-5 first half run to grab an eleven point lead at halftime. The Spartans got as close as four points in the second half before the Winhawks held on. Audrey Scharmer led the Winhawks with 17 points and Ellen Blacklock had 13 points and 13 rebounds.
Winona High now moves into a tie for second place in the Big Nine Conference with Mayo and Owatonna at 7-3. The three teams are two games behind first place Mankato East. The Winhawks are 9-7 overall and they’ve won 6 of their last 7 games.
Elsewhere in girls’ basketball, Rushford-Peterson dominated Lewiston-Altura 75-11 and Wabasha-Kellogg lost to Fillmore Central 61-58.
