Buffalo County's zoning committee showed support for modifying permit applications for frac-sand mining, and amending the county's zoning ordinance to add a section addressing non-metallic mining operations.
The county's Land Resources Department has been tasked with preparing proposed changes for the zoning committee to review at a meeting on Feb. 11. Land resources personnel provided the zoning committee with five options to consider in changing the county's process of handling mining permits.
The one favored by the committee would maintain a conditional-use permit requirement for frac-sand mines and stone quarries, but modify the application process to include advisory stances from rural town boards and county board zoning supervisors.
