Saint Mary's Women and Men Win Against Macalester

The Saint Mary’s women’s basketball team nearly suffered a crushing loss last night but the Cardinals rallied in the second half to beat Macalester 55-53. The Scotts came into the game with just a 4-17 record but they led Saint Mary’s by 15 with just under nine minutes to go in the second half. The Cardinals went on a 16-2 run over the next five minutes to grab the lead and then held on for the win. Saint Mary’s had a rough shooting night hitting just 33 percent from the field but won the game because they made twice as many free throws as Macalester.

Brittany Begrowicz and Jamie Stefely led the way with 12 points. The Cardinals are 18-4 on the season and 14-4 in the MIAC. The Cardinals are tied for third place but just a game behind Concordia and St. Benedict. St. Benedict beat Concordia last night to tie them up in the standings. Saint Mary’s will face St. Benedict next Wednesday night.

The Saint Mary’s men’s basketball team picked up just their third conference victory beating Macalester 58-46. The Cardinals did it without starting point guard Evan Pederson who is their second leading scorer. Pederson is out for the season with a strained MCL. Michael Burfiend led the way with 17 points and Brian Thomas and Mark Schumacher added 14. Saint Mary’s is 4-18 overall and 3-14 in the MIAC.
