Sand Mine Oversight

Rural town boards in Buffalo County would have a say on mining projects under a proposed new policy on industrial sand mining.

The county departments and committees overseeing highways and land resources also would have advisory authority along with town boards on new permit applications for mining projects.

Measures under recommendation by the county's zoning committee would expand governmental and public review of proposed mining projects before going to the county's zoning board of adjustment for final action.

County zoning supervisors are studying a preliminary policy brought forth by the county's Land Resources Department......

Under the proposed policy, one or more town boards with jurisdiction over a proposed mining project would be given up to 45 days to respond for or against a project or suggest project modifications.

The county's highway department and committee also would be asked to review and make recommendations regarding a proposed permit application during the same 45-day period......
