Frac Mines--EIS

Permits sought for two proposed frac sand mines in Saratoga Township will be delayed for as much as one year after the company seeking the permits announced it will conduct a voluntary environmental impact statement.

A  public hearing scheduled for Thursday, by the County Planning Commission and the County Board, on the Dablestein and Yoder mines was cancelled after Minnesota Sands announced it would seek the voluntary EIS.

County Planning and Environmental Services Director Jason Gilman said it also means that a final County Board decision on permits for the two mines, that was  scheduled for March 5th, will also be cancelled.  Gilman said it can take as much as a year or more to complete the lengthy environment impact statement.

Gilman said this could also impact the proposed frac sand processing plant Minnesota Propant  wants to construct near St. Charles because Minnesota Sands is also involved in that proposal.  Gilman said the county will release more details on the E-I-S and the county's role in its preparation at a later date.
