34 year old Marco McMillian owned MWM Consultancy, working with non-profit groups. McMillian received his master's degree in Philanthropy and Development from SMU.
McMillian was a candidate for mayor of nearby Clarksdale, Mississippi. The openly gay black man was a rarity in rural Mississippi politics. The death is not being investigated as a hate crime and a spokesperson for his campaign says its not believed it was politically motivated.
