Minnesota Democratic Senator Al Franken has introduced legislation that would provide additional resources to K-12 schools to address mental health problems in their student bodies.
The "Mental Health In Our Schools Act" would provide $200 million dollars per year over five years in grant funding for mental health initiatives. Currently there is a single school counselor, on average, for every 788 public school students. Franken says some schools are doing better...and all must do better.
The New Brighton district in the Twin Cities suburbs has reduced its student-counselor ration to closer to 300 to 1...and Franken says it pays dividends.
