The Winona High boys basketball team won an entertaining game in the opening round of the Section 1AAA tournament last night beating fifth seed Waseca 68-64. The Winhawks trailed by four at the half and the second half was a back and forth affair that featured 13 lead changes.
Brandon Gamoke led the way with 17 point and 14 rebounds while Jeff Schultz also added 17 points and 9 rebounds. Winona High improves to 16-11 and they have now won 10 of their last 12 games. The Winhawks move on to face second ranked Austin in the section semifinals Saturday night in Austin. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 and the game can be heard on AM 1230 KWNO and online at winonaradio.com.
In other games in Section 1AAA, Austin beat 8th seed Kasson-Mantorville 71-35, second seed New Prague beat Faribault 71-56 and third seed Red Wing held on against Albert Lea 59-56.
