Deer Hunting

How to best manage the deer herd and the deer hunt in southeastern Minnesota has become a heated discussion among outdoorspeople.

The Minnesota legislature is considering this year whether or not to extend a requirement that deer hunters count antler points on buck racks before pulling the trigger.  The goal is to grow more 'big bucks.'  The unintended consequence opponents say is deer overpopulation and making the sport less appealing to young people.

Perry Fitch of Pickwick is a state director for the Minnesota Deer Hunters Association.  While the association has no official position on the regulation, Fitch is actively lobbying lawmakers to eliminate the rule.

Crop farmers are largely opposed to the regulation, as well, because of the economic losses of a large deer population.  A corn farmer can see losses of up to 10% in the field due to wildlife, including deer.
