Winona police said a 28 year old Winona man was apprehended outside the Walmart store early Monday as he tried to make off with a shopping cart full of expensive merchandise.
Sargent Chris Nelson said officers were called to the store just after 3:30 a.m. and caught Phillip Ray Flatten outside the store as he was trying get away with the cart. Nelson said Flatten had filled the cart with some 38-hundred dollars worth of electronic items and shoes.
Nelson said Flatten allegedly was threatening people inside the store with a knife when he was confronted before police got there. Nelson also said Flatten allegedly tried to disarm a police officer at the hospital where he was taken.
Flatten was jailed on felony charges of aggravated robbery, second degree assault, and theft. He was also cited with possession of a hypodermic needle and drug paraphernalia. Nelson said no one in the store was injured.
