Winona High Baseball Team Looking For Strong Season
Paul Van Beek Reporting
The Winona High baseball team had their first winning season in ten years last season but this year they are looking for even better results. The Winhawks went 12-9 last year and finished third in the Big Nine Conference. A strong pitching staff returns led by senior Bryan Rohde who didn’t pitch last year because of an arm injury. Rohde, who will pitch for St. Cloud State next year, had a breakout season his sophomore year but was limited to playing just first base last year. Rohde was a honorable mention all-conference player last season at first base.
Rohde won’t have to carry a huge burden on the mound because the Winhawks return three of their top four pitchers from last year in Hunter Kruse, Daniel Kronebusch and Drew Thompson. Kruse was an all-conference and all-section pick last year after going 2-3 with a 2.12 ERA in six starts.
The Winhawks’ hitting will have to improve from last year after hitting just .222 as a team a year ago. Winona High has some holes to fill in the lineup as they return just two fulltime starters from last year in Rohde and Kruse. Rohde hit .262 with a homerun and 13 RBIs.
The Winhawks are scheduled to open the season on Tuesday with a home doubleheader against Faribault.
