Experience Should Lead To More Cotter Victories
The Cotter baseball team struggled with some injuries last season and with a healthy club this year the Ramblers should be able to improve on last year’s 7-13 record. The Ramblers built up depth because of those injuries and they return seven starters for this year. Two of Cotter’s best players Roger Brosnahan and Owen Burnikel suffered the injury bug last season. Burnikel, in fact, had to sit out the entire season with an injury after starting for the two years prior to that. Brosnahan, the Ramblers’ shortstop, had a shoulder injury and was regulated to DH duties last season. Brosnahan did excel from the DH spot hitting .450 with 2 homeruns, 9 extra base hits and 17 RBIs. Another key returner will be All-HVL catcher John DeMarais who hit .343 with 13 RBIs last season.
Burnikel will headline Cotter’s pitching staff with Nate Karnick as a strong number two starter. Cotter coach Matt O’Brien says Burnikel has the ability to pitch at the college level. Cotter has some good pitching depth to go along with Burnikel and Karnick, which should help them in a season which could be condensed because of the weather.
The Ramblers are scheduled to open up the season on Monday at home against Pine Island.
