Winona State University Vice President Dr. James Schmidt has been confirmed as the next
Chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
The 48-year-old Schmidt was recommended for the position by a search committee last month. He will begin his new duties on July First and will succeed Dr. Brian Levin-Stankevich who stepped down a year ago.
He was confirmed Friday by the U-W Board of Regents during a meeting in La Crosse.
Schmdt has served as WSU Vice President for University Advancement and as Executive Director of the WSU Foundation Board of Trustees.
He began his employment at Winona State in 1998.
He holds a doctorate degree in educational policy an administration from the University of Minnesota, and a master's in business administration from the University of St. Thomas.
Schmidt is the second Winona State administrator in the last two months to be named to head a university. Vice President for Student Life and Development Connie Gores in February was named as the new president of Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall.
