A Trempealeau County committee went against recommendations and approved permits for what is being called the largest proposed frac sand mine in the county.
The Trempealeau County Times reports the county's environmental and land use committee voted 5 to 1 to issue permits for a 700 acre site off Highway 53 in the Town of Preston that was proposed by Sand Products of Wisconsin, a group of local landowners.
The company said only about 250 of the acres would actually be mined. The meeting and public hearing lasted some eight hours and was attended by about 150 people. The committee approved permits for both mining the sand and reclamation of the land.
The county's department of land management, which reviews and processes all applications for non-metallic mining operations, had recommended the permits be denied.
