Minnesota Public Radio reports House budgets contain roughly $600 million in new fees or fee increases, while the Senate budgets look to raise about half that. That's in addition to the $2.5 billion in taxes proposed by Democrats in control of the Legislature and Democratic Gov. Mark Dayton.
Rep. Mary Liz Holberg, a Lakeville Republican, says the fee hikes aren't necessary to fix a $627 million budget deficit. Some Democrats defended them, saying they put money into underfunded programs.
