Wisconsin milk production increased 3% to 2.4 billion pounds last month while the number of licensed dairy herds dipped by 73 herds to just over 11,000 according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
The state's count of dairy herds dropped by 614 herds over the past year while milk production remained solidly in second place behind California.
Minnesota milk production for the same time frame was 807 million pounds. Wisconsin continues to lead the nation in production of cheddar cheese and total production of all cheeses.
Buffalo County farmers harvested 19,800 acres of hay alfalfa in 2012, yielding 2.6 tons per acre and more than 51,000 tons totally. Trempealeau County harvested 39,400 tons on 20,400 acres, averaging 2 tons per acre.
