The La Crosse bomb-sniffing dog was called out to the Dakota area along Oak Hill Drive Wednesday evening after someone discovered what appeared to be a bomb inside a hollow tree. Winona County Chief Deputy Ron Ganrude said the green metal box turned out to be part of a geocaching contest and contained several items including toys and games for the eventual winner. A note was also inside explaining the contest. Ganrude said it was not known who was sponsoring the game. The box was taken to the sheriff's office. Geocaching is where groups use their GPS devices to track down items placed a various locations.
