The US Army Corps of Engineers says it will close Lock and Dam 5A near Fountain City for 12 hours on Thursday to replace an upstream miter gate that was severely damaged last week after being struck by barge.
The closure will take place between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. Thursday and it will affect all commercial and recreational traffic on the Mississippi River in the Winona area during the replacement.
A towboat owned by the MarquetteTransportation Company, the C. Michael Reeves, was navigating down river on May 16th, when it hit the lock gate. The accident caused significant damage to an upstream gate. There were no injuries and the barges did not contain any hazardous materials.
Corps engineers assessed the damage and determined the lock can remain open with some restrictions until the gate is replaced on Thursday.
