Winona and Other Counties Prepare For Same Sex Marriage

Hennepin and Ramsey Counties plan to start accepting marriage license applications from same-sex couples this week.
A revised application will be available on the Ramsey County vital records web page and at the office in St. Paul starting at 8 a.m. Thursday.  Hennepin County also begins accepting license applications from same-sex couples beginning Thursday.

Winona County Administrator Duane Hebert says that Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman is taking the lead on research and planning for the new licenses...and he says Winona County is following their lead.
Minnesota has a five day waiting period to get married. That means same-sex couples wishing to have a license issued Aug. 1, the effective date for Minnesota's newly passed gay-marriage law, would need to apply in person by 4 p.m. July 26.  It's unknown exactly when same sex marriage licenses will be available in Winona County.
