Two Winona veterans have been named as military grand marshals for the upcoming Steamboat Days Grande Parade on June 23rd. The two are Arthur Redig and David Mahlke III.
Redig enlisted in the Army in 1940 and was the first person from the Winona area to join the service for World War Two and he was part of the first troops to leave the US for the war in Europe.
Mahlke enlisted in the National Guard shortly before the September 11th attack on the World Trade Center. He later joined the Army and was deployed to Kuwait when he suffered a very serious head injury after the tank he was riding in crashed just after it crossed the boarder into Iraq during the initial invasion. He underwent surgery to replace a missing part of his skull with a titanium mesh plate.
