Old Houston County Jail
The Houston County Board of Commissioners got some good news and some bad news when it comes to the old Houston County Jail building.
The Caledonia Argus reports a professional consultant, Robert Vogel, told the board the old jail, constructed in 1875, is in better shape than previously thought. Vogel said the bad news was that the county could have made it handicapped accessible for an estimated $200,000 instead of constructing a new $20 million jail.
Acessability was a big reason the county chose the new jail option.
The paper says the latest report will now allow the county to apply for grants to pay for moe detailed research on how the building could be re-used. Vogel told the board a final decision will have to be made on whether to move forward with re-use of the building or with demolishing it before the county seeks state funding for a project.
