Dr. Edward Ehlinger, the Commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Health, paid a visit to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester Tuesday to meet with business leaders and participate in a Worksite Wellness Roundtable Discussion.
Commissioner Ehlinger spoke with business leaders about worksite wellness, and he thanked Rochester for its work with the Statewide Health Improvement Program, a Department of Health initiative that supports community efforts to improve health.
The panel discussed the role of worksite wellness programs in increasing productivity and lowering health care costs by improving the health of their staffs through healthier eating, more physical activity, and smoking cessation efforts.
Before meeting with local business leaders, the commissioner visited Villages at Essex Park. the first smoke-free apartment building for a real estate company that has since converted other properties to being smoke-free.
A community survey found that 79 percent of Olmsted County residents who live in rentals would like it to be a smoke-free property.
