More money from people fined for possession of small quantities of marijuana will go into city coffers at Alma where the city council made pot and drug paraphernalia municipal offenses.
The city ordinance provides for a fine of up to $500 for possession of 14 or less grams of marijuana or drug paraphernalia.
The fine amount is the same or similar to a Buffalo County ordinance that gives police and prosecutors discretion to issue citation fines for small amounts of marijuana or paraphernalia.
Both the county and city ordinances are permitted under state law along with a host of other offenses that can be cited as local offenses rather than misdemeanor crimes.
In either case, possession of more than 14 grams of marijuana would be charged as a misdemeanor or felony as decided by state law and criminal complaint filed by the district attorney.
Alma's ordinance passed the city council without opposition. No one spoke for or against the ordinance at a public hearing.
