While Winona County said no earlier to establishing a weelage tax, the Olmsted County Board took the opposite track.
The board has approved a $10 tax per vehicle registered in the county starting next January First. The move was approved by the Minnesota legislature this spring but counties are given the option to impose the new tax.
The Post-Bulletin reports the proceeds will be used to fund transit and transportation projects. The Winona County Board wanted no part of the new wheelage tax and placed the proposal on the shelf for possible future consideration.
The Olmsted County Board also approved a 0.25% sales tax on vehicles. But that will not begin until the state is ready to implement it.
