The Minnesota Department of Transportation says the new Highway 43 bridge to be located next to the existing bridge will look similar to the existing bridge.
Project Manager Terry Ward said three options were considered and the concrete segmental box girder bridge was chosen so it would not detract from the existing bridge. Ward said the recommended design meets with the city of Winona's request for a new bridge that also maintains the historical integrity of the existing bridge.
The public will get a chance to view the recommended new bridge design and learn more about the project at the August 12th open house at the Winona National Guard Armory from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Ward says the Winona City Council will need to sign off on the entire bridge plan. The council will take up the plan at its August 19th meeting.
Ward says a formal public hearing on the environmental assessment document for the project will be held this coming fall.
