A Twilight Meeting focusing on Malting Barley production will be held on Monday, August 5th at DS Farms, W1576 County Road E in Alma (on the edge of Herold).
The meeting will begin at 5:30 pm. Twenty-one varieties of Spring Malting Barley have been planted in a replicated plot on the farm and should be mature by the meeting date.
Dr. Kevin Smith, University of Minnesota, who is responsible for directing research in barley genetics and managing the barley breeding program, will be present to discuss the Minnesota Barley Program.
Malting barley was once an important cash crop in Western Wisconsin. This project is exploring whether varieties exist today that may once again make it an important crop.
