Boaters using public landings in Alma have paid some $9,000 in fees since the city enacted an ordinance to raise money for upkeep of the landings and docks.
Although the launch fee ordinance drew opposition from local tourism, lodging and outdoors recreational interests, it passed the city council 4 to 2.
Since enacted on June 14th, the collection of launch fees quickly climbed to $9,000 in less than two months, according to Alma City Clerk Linda Torgerson.
The city council predicted a launch fee would raise as much as $25,000 a year.
Alma charges a $5 per day boat launch fee and sells annual passes for $30 to residents and $45 to non-residents.
