The public is being invited to take part in the 'Great Mississippi River Clean-up' coming up this Saturday, September 7th.
The event is held annually in 23 cities along the river and it is sponsored by the Living Lands and Waters group out of Illinois. Locally, volunteer crews will work to clean up pools 5-A and 6.
Staging areas include the McNally boat landing on Prairie Island and Winona's Levee Park.
The National Wildlife and Fish Refuge-Winona District, and the Friends of the Refuge Headwaters will host the local event from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Last year nearly 2,500 volunteers took part in the event in 23 states along the river and over 127,000 of debris were removed from the river between St. Paul and St. Louis.
Volunteers will pick up debris from the water and the river banks. Bring your own boat if you are willing to supply it. Pre-registration is required to ensure availability of supplies. You can register at www.livinglandsandwaters.org......
