New Frac Mines

Trempealeau County received applications for three new frac sand mines despite a moratorium on new mines that went into affect last Friday.

The Trempealeau County Times reports the three applications were already in the pipeline before the moratorium, that could last up to one year, took affect.

One of the proposed mines could be the largest in Trempealeau County in terms of its initial design.

The newspaper reports a group named All-Energy Silica proposes a mine that would be 800-acres in size in the Town of Arcadia.

A second application is for a proposed mine south of Blair that would include mining 50 of the site's 80 acres,

A third application is for the expansion of an exiting frac sand mine in the town of Arcadia.

That brings the total of frac sand mines with applications filed before the Friday deadline to 29. About one fourth of those mines are actually in operation.

The county board approved the moratorium last month to give a special commitee time to investigate future and current impacts of the mines on the county and the environment..........
