Winona Downtown Fire



 A portion of downtown Winona was destroyed by an early morning fire on Friday.

Fire Chief Curt Bittle said the blaze was discovered about 2:00 a.m. at the corner of Third and Center and was discovered after an alarm went off in the Brosnahan Law Office and flames spread to adjacent buildings.

Bittle said the Islamic Center was also destroyed and damage was caused to The Blooming Grounds Coffee House and two floors of apartments above it.

Bittle said firefighters were able to stop the fire from spreading to the rest of the block.

Bittle said  the fire may have started in the Islamic Center but he added the ignition point and source were not immediately determined.

The fire was mostly  under control by about 8:45 a.m.

Other businesses impacted by the fire included Pretty Things, Sole Sport, Pipe Dreams and the Winona Garden Restaurant.

The Winona Fire Department received assistance from departments in Wilson, Pickwick, St. Charles and Goodview

The Red Cross was at the scene and was assisting a number of residents that were evacuated from the apartments. There was no estimate of how many were affected.  No injuries were reported......
